Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is set to open source its Grok chatbot this week, fulfilling Musk's vision of making artificial intelligence accessible to all. This move comes after Musk has been a vocal critic of OpenAI, accusing them of straying from their original mission and prioritizing profits over the benefit of humanity.
"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Open-sourcing a chatbot like Grok means that its source code will be publicly available and redistributable. This offers several advantages, including increased flexibility for enterprises to find solutions to problems without relying solely on internal teams.
The announcement has sparked further debate about OpenAI's approach. When a user suggested that OpenAI should follow suit and open source their technology, Musk responded sharply, stating, "OpenAI is a lie."
Musk has long advocated for open-source AI, expressing his views during a podcast last November. "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing," he said in a conversation with Lex Fridman.
This decision follows the release of Grok by xAI, which reportedly took four months to develop. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to the release with a post showcasing how Grok could be built with a single prompt on GPT Builder, implying it could be created easily.
"GPTs can save a lot of effort," Altman stated.
Musk retorted, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
