Recalling the T20 World Cup 2024 showdown, Sharma described the pre-match environment as nothing short of a festival, a feeling that permeated from the team hotel to the stadium. India ultimately secured a narrow six-run victory in a low-scoring thriller, with Jasprit Bumrah earning Player of the Match honors for his impressive figures of 3-14.

"Leading up to the India vs. Pakistan match, we received information about a potential threat," Sharma revealed. "For two days prior to the game, we were restricted from leaving the hotel. The atmosphere intensified from that point. The hotel was incredibly crowded, with fans and media everywhere. It became clear that this was more than just another match – it was something special."

During the match, India faced early setbacks, losing key wickets including Virat Kohli (4), Rohit Sharma (13), and Axar Patel (20). However, Rishabh Pant delivered a crucial innings of 42 off 31 balls, including six boundaries, helping the team reach a respectable total of 119.

Sharma lauded Pant's performance, stating that the wicketkeeper-batter played to his full potential and kept India in the game on a challenging pitch. "We simply wanted Rishabh to be himself – to play freely and disrupt the bowlers, which he did perfectly," Sharma explained. "His innings of 42 was equivalent to a score of 70 on that difficult surface."

He added, "We aimed for 140, but losing wickets impacted our progress. Rishabh's crucial knock held the innings together. While we fell short by 10-15 runs, I believed that securing early wickets with the new ball could make 119 feel like 160."

The Indian captain also praised the exceptional bowling performance of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, emphasizing their ability to defend the total and their importance in the T20 format.

"Bumrah is a wicket-taker who also restricts runs. Balancing his usage is crucial, especially when the opposition is chasing at a run-a-ball," Sharma noted. "Arshdeep has been phenomenal, becoming India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is due to his smart bowling."

Sharma concluded, "My focus was on strategically utilizing their remaining overs, considering the incoming batters and how they would handle Arshdeep and Bumrah. The challenging pitch made it difficult for new batters to settle, so our aim was to force new players to the crease."
