The Indian cricket team has commenced its preparations for the crucial second Test against England, holding their first practice session at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday. This follows their narrow five-wicket defeat in the opening Test at Headingley, which saw England take an early 1-0 lead in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.

All members of the squad were present, but Jasprit Bumrah, the team's pace spearhead, did not participate in any on-field activities. Prasidh Krishna was also absent from bowling or drills, while the rest of the team engaged in a full training session. Mohammed Siraj dedicated a significant amount of time to practicing his batting. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was observed in lengthy discussions with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep.
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were seen batting in the nets, while the other bowlers, excluding Bumrah and Prasidh, went through their bowling routines. Despite the scrutiny following the loss in Leeds, the atmosphere within the camp appeared relaxed. The team leadership continues to support the squad, which is currently in a transition phase, with senior players offering encouragement to the younger members.
The focus now shifts to Bumrah's potential absence. Having bowled 44 overs in the first Test, the expectation is that he will only play in three matches of this series to effectively manage his workload. Coach Gambhir emphasized in the post-match press conference that Bumrah's appearances wouldn't be dictated by the series scoreline; instead, decisions would be made on a game-by-game basis.
Given the short turnaround between the second Test at Edgbaston (July 2–6) and the third at Lord’s (July 10–14), indications suggest that Birmingham could be the match where Bumrah is rested. Both Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar have stressed the importance of workload management, implying that Bumrah’s availability will be determined with a long-term perspective, regardless of the series' current state.
On Thursday, the players participated in a team-building activity at an adventure park in Birmingham, providing a refreshing break before returning to the intensity of the Test series.
