Former England captain Nasser Hussain has offered his perspective on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England's Test squad, describing it as a "gamble worth taking," while also urging caution about immediately incorporating him into the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Archer, whose last Test appearance was in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the upcoming second Test. The 30-year-old has faced a series of setbacks due to persistent elbow and back injuries, recently making his return to red-ball cricket for Sussex, where he bowled 18 overs against Durham, claiming 1/32.
Hussain, in a conversation with Sky Sports, acknowledged the emotional and physical challenges Archer has overcome. He stated, "Firstly, it's great news for Archer and England. Jofra must have endured so much with those injuries, the rehab, the pain, and the mental struggle of repeated injuries and comebacks. It's fantastic to see him back in the squad, even though he hasn't played a Test match in four years."
However, the former captain advised against rushing Archer into the starting XI for the Edgbaston Test. "I believe it carries too much risk this week. However, if things have progressed exceptionally well – and I'm not privy to Jofra Archer's physical condition – they might decide to play him this week. The question then becomes, who do you leave out?"
Despite his reservations about an immediate return, Hussain remains optimistic about the long-term benefits of Archer's comeback. "I genuinely think it's a gamble worth considering; I'm just uncertain about whether this week is the right time. I would prefer to see it happen a week later at Lord's."
England currently holds a 1-0 lead in the five-match series following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The remainder of the squad remains unchanged for the Edgbaston Test.
