Following England's impressive victory over India in the first Test at Headingley, voices within the team suggest they were capable of chasing an even larger target. Jos Buttler, alongside former fast bowler Stuart Broad, analyzed England's successful pursuit of 371 runs, hinting that the team would have embraced the challenge of chasing down 450.

In their podcast 'For The Love of Cricket', Buttler and Broad lauded England's aggressive approach and identified pivotal moments that shifted the game's momentum.

India's strong first innings total of 471, fueled by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, initially placed them in a commanding position. However, England responded emphatically, narrowing the deficit to just six runs. India then posted 364 in their third innings, setting England a target of 371. Ben Duckett's spectacular 149 and a steady performance from Jamie Smith helped England secure a memorable victory.

Buttler expressed his confidence in the team's ability. "I think it would've come down to time, but even if they were chasing 450, they'd have given it a go. They cruised that 370," he stated, emphasizing England's composure and control during the chase.

He acknowledged that a higher target would necessitate greater risk-taking, but he maintained that England's batting lineup, particularly the top order, possesses the necessary firepower and self-belief.

“They’d have had to take more risks, but they’d definitely have had a go at it,” Buttler asserted.

This bold assertion aligns with captain Ben Stokes' consistent philosophy of avoiding draws, a defining characteristic of England's "Bazball" approach. Under the leadership of coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes, England has consistently pursued ambitious fourth-innings targets with unwavering determination.

With a 1-0 series lead and considerable momentum, England are heading to Edgbaston, buoyed by their statement win and a clear intention to continue pushing boundaries.
