Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, has publicly condemned the surge of fake quotes attributed to him circulating across various sports websites and social media platforms.
In a video message shared on his official Instagram account, Gavaskar directly addressed the issue, refuting the false attribution of comments he insists he never made. He strongly urged fans to exercise caution and critical thinking when encountering such statements online.
"Over the last few months, it has come to my notice that a lot of sports websites and individual accounts have been attributing comments and quotes to me that I've never made," Gavaskar stated in the video. He further implored viewers to "verify, fact-check, and not to believe everything that they read, particularly coming from some of these individual accounts and sports websites."
Currently in England as a commentator for the ongoing Test series between India and England, Gavaskar expressed his concern regarding the widespread dissemination of these fabricated remarks. While he refrained from naming specific platforms, his disapproval of this deceptive trend was evident.
These pronouncements from the 75-year-old cricket icon follow a series of alleged "quotes" attributed to him during India's first Test loss, particularly concerning Rishabh Pant's centuries and Jasprit Bumrah's bowling performance. Gavaskar's actual commentary during the match was distorted by several online platforms seeking to generate user engagement.
