Aronian Pens Heartfelt Plea to Kramnik Amid Defamation Lawsuit

Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian has publicly appealed to his "chess parent," Vladimir Kramnik, urging reconciliation after the former World Champion filed a defamation lawsuit that has shaken the chess community. Aronian's letter follows Kramnik's civil defamation case filed in Geneva against Chess.com, Chessdom, and Czech GM David Navara. Kramnik accuses them of defamation following public disputes over alleged cheating in online chess.

Aronian's message acts as both a personal tribute and a call for peace. He acknowledges Kramnik's significant impact on his career, recognizing him as a key influence on his chess development.

He reflects on Kramnik's impressive career, highlighting his victories against Garry Kasparov and Peter Leko, as well as his resilience during the controversial "Toiletgate" match against Veselin Topalov. Aronian praised Kramnik’s strength and spirit.

However, Aronian directly addresses what he perceives as a troubling shift in Kramnik's behavior. "You are fighting your own demons," he writes, acknowledging the emotional burden of Kramnik's fight against perceived cheating in online chess.

The letter comes after Kramnik implied that Navara had cheated, which led Navara to share a letter detailing the severe impact the accusations had on his mental health.

Kramnik responded by demanding legal action or silence, ultimately filing a lawsuit which has been met with criticism from the chess world.

Grandmasters like Pavel Eljanov have voiced their support for Navara, with Eljanov stating that “David is one of the most honest people in chess," echoing the sentiment of many others.

Aronian concludes his appeal with a message of unity: “We are a family... let us start from a fresh page.” In a time of division within the chess world, his message emphasizes the need for understanding and reconciliation.
