Despite India's strong batting performance, Gautam Gambhir has defended the lower order after their collapses contributed to a disappointing defeat against England at Headingley.
India succumbed to a 371-run chase by England on the fifth day, marking their seventh loss in the last nine Tests. The defeat was particularly frustrating considering India's dominance for much of the match.
India amassed 835 runs and recorded five centuries, including Rishabh Pant's twin centuries. However, two significant batting collapses proved to be their undoing.
These collapses transformed the game, allowing England to chase a manageable target of 371.
Shubman Gill, who marked his captaincy debut with a century, revealed India aimed for a target of around 435. Gautam Gambhir, however, believed a first-innings score of 570-580 would have secured dominance for India.
Despite criticism, Gambhir defended the lower order's application. He acknowledged their disappointment and emphasized that failures are part of the game.
"Even proper batters fail," Gambhir stated. "Hopefully they'll learn, and hopefully we'll get better performances from our tail. And that is not the only reason we lost the Test match."
Another critical factor in India's defeat was their poor catching performance. Seven catches were dropped, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being a repeat offender. Ben Duckett capitalized on a dropped catch, scoring a match-defining 149. Gill admitted the team needed to improve their catching standards.
Gambhir dismissed the "young team" narrative as an excuse. He stressed the importance of winning for the country and vowed to approach each Test with a winning mentality.
Gambhir confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah would play only two more Test matches as part of a pre-series workload management plan. The decision on which Tests Bumrah would participate in is yet to be made. Gambhir expressed confidence in the remaining bowlers to compete effectively.
