I recently went to the Virginia Archives and
was able to obtain a copy of Benjamin Rogers 1801 deed in Wythe County. I
have found that his wife’s name was not Lokey, as transcribed in Adventures on
the Western Waters, but appears as Sokey. It does appear to be an
"L" at first glance, but when comparing the letter with other letters
"S" and "L" on the same page, it is apparent her name was
Sokey. I think this is probably a misspelling of Sookie, which is a
nickname for Susannah.
The 63 acres he sold on Cripple Creek was a land grant from the year before. He
sold it to Robert Majors. In 1804, I found Joseph Rogers buying land on
Cripple Creek from Robert Majors, but it is not clear if it included the same
land as Benjamin sold since it contains 100+ acres.
Here is a transcription of the deed:
This Indenture made this 29th day of June in the year of our Lord 1801 Between
Benjamin Rogers and wife of the one part and Robert Majors of the other.
Witnesseth, that for and in Consideration of the Sum of Sixty dollars, paid in
hand by the said Robert to the said Benjamin, he the said Benjamin doth grant
bargain and Sell by these presents unto the said Robert a Tract or parcel of
land lying and being on the waters of Cripple creek in Wythe County Containing
Sixty three acres and Bounded as follows, to wit, Beginning at a double black
oak N 85 W 94 poles Crossing a branch to a large white oak N 47o W 28 poles to
Two black oak Sapplings S 76o W 24 poles to a black oak S 43o W 48 poles to a
black oak S 20o E 46 poles to a black oak S 70 E poles, to two Chestnut Oaks, N
45, E 56 to a black oak and hiccory Sapplin S 80, E 68 poles to a poplar, N 10 E
50 poles to the Beginning Together with all appurtenances To have and to hold
the said Tract of land with its appurtenances to the said Robert Majors and his
heirs - In Testimoney whereof the said Benjamin Rogers and wife hath
hereunto set their hands and Seals the day and year first above written
