Notes From Jesse L. Rogers b. 1855

(Comment by Site Owner, Jerry Rogers): The following notes by the Great-Grandson of John "the Powder Maker" Rogers, Jesse L. Rogers b. 1855, represent an interesting historical document for which we are thankful to Jeanie Rogers Snoddy for sharing. However, please remember that these notes were written after 1882 based on things that the author had heard about his ancestors. Unfortunately, some of the information given is not supported by evidence that we have since uncovered or historical facts.

After reading the following, I highly recommend that you also read the well documented comments by Ray that he proved in 2001. These can be found under: "Bits, Pieces, & Mysteries / Undocumented Family Traditions / John's Rev War Record"

I also suggest that you read the information at: "Bits, Pieces, & Mysteries / Revolutionary War Period / Rogers Boys & the Battle of Shallow Ford"

Entries from a family Bible written by Jesse L. Rogers b. 1855 who received this Bible on 13 December 1882 from his father Jesse L. Rogers, Sr. b. 1811

My great grandfather was John Rogers. He was born in Wythe County, Va., was a soldier under Campbell in the Battle of King’s Mountain Oct. 1780 and claimed to have fired the shot that killed Furgerson. (sic) He moved to Washington County, Tenn. and settled on Chucky River 6 miles e of Jonesboro in Oct. 1782 and removed to Powells Valley, Claiborne County and settled where John Ausnins ? (Ausmus?) now lives Dec 22, 1799 and died there Jan 5, 1822. He had 25 children by 3 wives. His father was Benjamin Rogers who was born in England and came to this country and first settled in Wythe County, Va., but afterwards removed to Blount County, Tenn. and died there in 1802. He is said to be great grandson of John Rogers, the editor of the Mathews Bible and who was put to death in Smithfield England in 1555.

My grandfather was David Rogers who was born Oct.3, 1779 in Wythe County, Va. and died in Claiborne County, Tenn. Sept.17, 1871. He married Polly Lewis who was born Jan 1, 1781 and died Feb. 13, 1880. They had 13 children as follows:
