From Caryl Ilene (Smith) Okamoto) (Granddaughter of William Rodgers): December 2001 - Typewritten Notes:

Let me tell you about Grandpa Rodgers.

He was a big man. At least 6 feet 3 inches tall, slender, but sturdily built. He was a quiet man. I never heard him raise his voice, except to call his dog. He smoke a pipe and chewed tobacco. I don't know much at all about his family, but I do know he had five brothers. I know this because he chewed Five Brothers tobacco. There were other brands: Prince Albert, Red Man, Beech Nut. I asked him why he chewed Five Brothers, and he replied, "Because I have five brothers, and it makes me feel at home."

My Dad loved Grandpa. He always called him "Mr. Rodgers", and he called Grandma "Mrs. Rodgers". He often said no one ever treated him as nice as Mr. Rodgers. This ia story that Dad used to tell:

When he was quite a young man he worked on the farm that Grandpa oversaw. There were several other young men working there. Daddy (Lee Smith) lived in the house with the family and ate with them. I think some of the other workers probably did also, but I am not sure about that. Daddy was on his own and had been since he was 14, so he had learned early on that he had to fight his own battles. However, he was so likeable that he had many friends. This particular story took place in the big barn that is in the picture Curtis Murden took and called "Granddad's Barn". At that time, of course, the barn was pretty new. I don't know why they were fighting, but the other guy called Daddy a "Son of a Bitch", which in those days was considered just about the worst thing you could be called. Daddy was using a pitchfork, at the time, one with a long handle and three long and very thing and sharp tines. He took the handle and knocked the man down, then thrust the tines on his chest and probably threatened to kill him. One of the other hired hands ran for Grandpa, who came immediately. Seeing one man on the ground with a pitchfork pressed again his chest and Daddy holding it firmly in place, probably gave Grandpa a clue that everything was not right. He asked what the problem was, and Daddy told him "This guy called me a Son of a Bitch". Grandpa asked if this was true and several people confirmed it. Grandpa told Daddy to stand back. Then he told the other guy to get up, pack up, get his pay, because he was fired. Daddy was still telling this story when he was well into his nineties. It was probably the first time anyone had ever come to his defense who had any authority. He always remembered it, and helped Grandpa out until the day he died.

By the time I was old enough to pay attention, Grandpa was no longer able to work. He had a lame leg and always walked with one crutch or a cane. There is an interesting story regarding this lame leg. I had always heard that he had "White's Disease", which left him crippled. However, no one ever seemed to know what White's Disease was. I thought this was a fact, until I mentioned it to Ruth Ellen, when I was probably 65 years old. She said "Oh, now, that's not how it happened. He was kicked by a mule!" Having this new information, I went to Rosemary to confirm or deny, and guess what... she said we were both wrong. Grandpa had been hit with an axe. Finally I decided to ask Aunt Wilma, who was one of his children. This is the real story, (I think). Grandpa had a tumor on the bone. It was removed, but it never healed, and gave him a great deal of trouble for the rest of his life.

Ruth Ellen stuck with her story, though. She said, well, maybe he was hit with an axe, and had a tumor on the bone, but she knew for a fact that he had also been kicked by a mule!

I had also heard another story that I had Aunt Wilma confirm. I remembered (I thought) hearing Grandpa say that he had maggots put in the wound to clear it out. This was not uncommon. I had heard during the Civil War, but it certainly sounded appalling to me! She said that he had never had this done, but that he had mentioned it at times.

When I was somewhere between four and eleven years old, Grandma and Grandpa lived on the other side of the farm we lived on. It was probably a quarter or half-mile walk through the orchard. Grandpa would walk with a crutch or a cane over to see Mother, and talk to her for a while, and usually had his big, old, yellow dog, Mike with him. Mike was a sturdy, short-haired mixed breed dog that loved Grandpa. Grandpa walked with one stiff leg, and (I'm not making this up), Mike would walk along beside him with two stiff legs. Mike was quite capable of walking normally, or running like the wind after a rabbit, but when he walked into our back yard beside Grandpa, he had two stiff legs.

Grandpa was our resident pharmacist. Jimmy and I were forever stepping on nails in the summertime. We never wore shoes from the last day of school until the first day of the following semester. At least once every year, when I was a child, I stepped on a nail, or Jimmy did. When this happened, whoever wasn't injured was sent on a run to Grandpa's house. The message was "Bring a big chew of tobacco and come". And he always did. He put the wet tobacco on the puncture wound and mother wrapped it with a white rag. This drew our the poison. All I know for sure is that it wasn't long before we were out running and playing, and no one ever got lockjaw, even though we were always near a barnyard.

Grandpa's other tobacco cure was for earaches. The message to Grandpa under these circumstances was, "Come over and bring your pipe." He would take a deep breath of smoke, and breathe it into the aching ear. Frankly, I can't remember that it helped much, but we had faith in Grandpa's healing ability.

Grandpa had a big, heavy mustache. I can't remember ever hearing him sing, but Daddy always said he had a beautiful bass voice. He would tell how they climbed on the wagon to ride home from the fields at the end of the day, and his favorite song to hear Grandpa sing was "Amazing Grace".

Grandpa died when I was twelve years old. In those days, when someone died nit he home, a big black wreath was hung on the front door so people would know a dead person was there. The undertaker came and took the body away, and brought him back in a coffin, where he lay in the living room at least two days. The body was never left alone, and old friends would come and stay all-night and talk to each other in low tones, so as not to disturb the rest of the house, and to keep themselves awake. Neighbors brought lots of food, but the thing I remember about Grandpa's wake was that one of the Brown family (not related, but old friends) brought three dozen doughnuts. I don't think I had ever seen so many in my life, and that is why I remember it. In those days, people didn't use funeral homes. Maybe there weren't any, or it was Depression, and maybe it was too expensive for regular people. I really don't know. However, Grandpa was buried from his home. The house was full. It wasn't a very big house, and he had ten children and lots of grandchildren. This was when I remember seeing Aunt Lillie and Aunt May, Grandpa's sisters. They both smoke clay pipes, and sat near the stove and I don't remember hearing either of them say anything, but I was probably so interested in seeing women smoking that if they had held a prolonged dialogue, I probably wouldn't have heard a word. I don't know where they lived, or how far they had to come to the funeral, but I remember them. I want to say they were both wearing old fashioned sunbonnets, but maybe I am just making that part up.

I don't remember, but I imagine someone sang "Amazing Grace".

Notes for MARY CISELA STUART:
From Caryl Ilene (Smith) Okamoto: Granddaughter of Mary Cisela Stuart Rodgers - Typewritten notes:

Grandma Rodgers was pretty special. She would witch water. She took a fork from a peach tree, held one end of the fork in either hand, held the point straight out from her body, adn started walking. Sometimes she would walk over a plot of land and find no water. But when she did find water, the pointed end of the forked stick would turn straight down to the ground. She could tell how far down the water was by counting her steps from the point where she first felt a tremor in the stick until it pointed straight down. A lot of people don't believe this, but I do because I have seen her do it. She witched a well at the house we moved to when I was four. She told my Dad he would have to dig down 28 feet to find water. He dug where she told him, and sure enough there was water. It might not have been exactly 28 feet, but it was pretty close. When we moved to another house when I was eleven, she cane to witch water, because the well on the property was dry. She could not find any water, and we found out later there were no wells anywhere in that area. As long as they lived there, Mother and Daddy had to haul in water from somewhere else. People often asked her to find water for them. They would come and get her and take her to their property. They offered to pay her, and although they were very poor and really could have used the money, she said it was a gift from God, and she would not take pay.
Grandma could also cure ringworm. Years ago, ringworm was common, and a nuisance. She would spit on her finger and rub it on the ringworm, and within a few days it would disappear. I can't understand this, I have just heard that story all my life, so I have to believe it.
She also loved to play the piano and sing. Sometimes on the farm, if the wind was in the right direction, we would hear her, even though she was some distance away. I don't remember if she sang well, but she certainly enjoyed singing!
