No redheads in my branch, but plenty of quick tempered individuals. In the Civil War Union Army documents for ggrandfather, Windle B. and his two sons, William Ward and James Alexander, the company description book lists all three as having Black Hair, Black Eyes and Dark Complexion. I assume this was Letty Downing Rogers, the Cherokee wife of William (first son of Benjamin, the emigrant) contribution to our blood line.

First of all, my thanks to Tom for the information on the fate of those who signed the Declaration of independence. Have shared it with grandchildren who might be writing a term paper for a U.S. History course.

I am a Civil War History buff. Would those of you who have information from the National Archives or other sources on the military service of Benjamin's second and third great grandsons be willing to share that information with us?

My great grandfather, Windle B. (Benjamin, William, John B., John A.) served in the Union Army as a private in William W. Westan Company B. 16th Regiment of Indiana Mounted Infantry Volunteers. Enlisted 2 August, 1862 in Salem, Washington County, Indiana and was discharged on 13 June, 1866 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

He was left for dead on the battlefield at the Battle of Mansfield and was taken prisoner by the confederate army and spent thirteen months at Camp Ford, a confederate prison, in Tyler, Texas.

His wife, Gracy B. (Benjamin, William, John B., Josiah), believing herself to be a widow, was married 22 April, 1865 to George W. Dalton. Needless to say, this made for an interesting scene when Windle returned to his farm in Lawrence County, Indiana following his release from the army!

I should add that Windle B. and Gracy B. were not only husband and wife, but first cousins. Their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters, Prudence and Elizabeth B. Cheatham.

I have not only the military record from the National Archives, Windle's discharge paper and the regimental history, I also have the first- hand account of the reunion of his parents by my grandfather, George Washington Rodgers. I also have the military records for Windle's two oldest sons who also served in the Union Army. William Ward, his first born died aboard a hospital boat on the Red River having served in the same unit as his father.

His second son James Alexander, served in another regiment and survived.

Jerry:

My great grandparents were Windle B. Rodgers and Gracy B. Rodgers. They were double first cousins. John Rodgers and Elizabeth Cheatham Rodgers, married 6 Feb., 1821 in Adair County KY, were the parents of Windle. Josiah Rodgers and Prudence Cheatham Rodgers, married 20 March 1822 in Adair County KY, were the parents of Gracy. We believe John and Josiah were brothers and that Elizabeth and Prudence were sisters. Gracy was born 15 Oct., 1826.

Windle was born 27 Dec., 1821. They married on 20 July 1843. We believe John and Josiah were sons of a John Belmont Ro(d)gers, b 1771 in Virginia, and that their mother was named Polly, last name unknown. We believe John Belmont was the son of William and Letty Downing. I have copied one of my cousins Barbara, who has been trying to piece our family history together for many years. She may be able to add additional details or correct me if I made an error.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Tom Rodgers

Can any of you help with the following:

In the early 1870's, my great grandparents, Windle B. and Gracy B. departed Daviess County, Indiana for Missouri. The settled in Benton County near the Hickory County border. an Indiana cousin tells me they went to Missouri because some of the family was already there...I haven't been able to make connection with any known Rogers family member in Benton County. Does anyone have records of your ancestors living in this part of Missouri?

At the time of Windle's death, on the 31 July, 1882, (He was buried at Mt Zion Cemetery in Hickory County), their post office was Wheatland, Hickory County, Missouri. Later, Gracy lived in Green County with her son Jacob C. and she died February 1905 in Bois D'Arc, Missouri.

Windle and Gracy had two sons, John Thomas and Silvester C. who lived in Hickory County and a son, Rufus Rice, who lived in Jackson County, and daughter, Mary P. Rogers Long who lived in Boone County. If you run across these names, you now know which family they belonged to.

Thanks,

Barbara
