Hi,

Yes, yes, I have been looking to find out more about Cretia. She is daughter of Millard Hedgpeth who lived near Rogersville. I am trying to find out when they died and where they are buried. Also where they lived. Do you know anything on those questions? Thanks so much,

Nancy Norris

Filed September 29, A.D. 1870 and recorded October 1 A.D. 1870. Probate Judge

Thomas J. Gideon.

NOTE: Nancy (Mrs. William Green) McCafferty, Elizabeth (Mrs. Thomas Thweatt) Gooch, Mary S. (Mrs. Jenkin G.) McCafferty and Margaret S. Craig were daughters of Mary Kenamore, widow of John William Kenamore who died north of Ozark in 1862. Mary then moved into the home of Nancy and William McCafferty southwest of Nixa in the James River valley. Mary's granddaughter, Malinda Evaline McCafferty, b. 1/1/1848, married Sam Pope, son of Leroy W. and Amanda Stowe Pope. Martha "Patsy" Kenamore married James W. Edwards, and her middle name may have been Ann; she reportedly died in 1861, but new evidence shows she was alive in 1865. She died before October 1867 when James W. and his second wife, Susan Sink, had a daughter; the identity of Ann O. (if that's what this will actually says) is consequently unknown. Margret S. Craig is always identified in land and other records as Margret Kenamore in Missouri; based on family tradition and this will, she married and was divorced from a Craig in Maury Co., TN before coming to Missouri.

Book 6, p. 161. 2/18/1876. John D. and Martha E. McCroskey, for $2000, to Martha Edwards, Leanna E. Edwards and Arminta Edwards, W 1/2 NW 1/4 and NW 1/4 SW 1/4 S23-27-22, or 120 acres. The grantees are the minor daughters of James W. and Susan Sink Edwards. During this period, James W. was facing financial troubles related to the purchase and operation of Clapp or Riverdale Mill. He appears to have taken cash reserves and purchased land in the names of his children.

Book 6, p. 154. 9/9;/1873. W.B. and Mary Edwards and A.A. Pendleton and wife L.C. (Lydia C. Brown), for $5,000, to James W. Edwards: E 1/2 Lot #2, NE 1/4 S1-26-22, W 1/2 Lot #2 NW 1/4 S6-26-21, Lot #2, SW 1/4 S31-27-21, Part NW 1/2 NW 1/4 S31=27-21 bounded on the north by Finley Creek, N 1/2 SW 1/4 S11-26-22, SW 1/4 NE 1/4 and SW 1/4 SE 1/4 S 36=27-22 except 2 acres in last 40 being the mill and mill yard, E 1/4 SE 1/4 S36-27-22, or 386 acres. Edwards. 2/3 interest in NW 1/4 SE 1/4 S36-27-22, including 2 acres in SW 1/ SE 1/4 of 36-27-22 containing the mill and millyard known as Clapp Mill in Finley Creek. And Marion Chasteen (Chastain) excepts 1/3 interst in 2 acres of land in the SW 1/4 SE 1/4 S36-27-22 being the ground that Clapp Mill is situated on and the millyard. Signed 9/9/1873 before JP LC Faught. Recorded 1/18/1876.

Book 6, p. 10. 7/13/1872. Martin L. and Martha T. Edwards, for $400, to james J. and Sarah E. (Kerr) Faught, W 1/2 SW 1/4 S12-27-22. Wits: Joseph Herndon and William P. Hedgpeth. (If this is the same William P. Hedgpeth cited in Bookj 2, p. 164, he had been released from prison or won an appeal to the Third District Court of Appeals.)

Book 38, p. 382 (I'm jumping ahead). 10/28/1898. Thomas E. and Martha M. Beverage, for $1,600 to Geo. W. McConnell, the N 1/2 NW 1/4 S9-27-22, 80 acres, and 6/11 interst in SW 1/4 S9-27-22 except 1/4 acre for a graveyard. (This almost certainly is Bledsoe Cemetery, which has three graves and lies west of McConnell Cemetery). Signed before JP M.R. Sellars. Recorded 1/3/1899 before County Recorder Frank Edwards, s/o William Carroll Edwards and Narcissa Johnson.

NOTE TO READERS:; I have many more deeds, but I cannot find those notebooks now. I will begin again after a search. My home is under construction for renovation and restoration, so it may take some time. RMcC

I have a few questions I am hoping a reader might be able to help answer. My family was the Wiley and Charlottie EDWARDS HEDGPETH family of Porter Twp., CHRISTIAN Co.. I have been doing as much research as possible here in Kansas trying to locate Wiley's land. From help that I have rec'd on line and the tax lists, I take it that Wiley's land was on Hwy 14 on the west and east sides of Gregg St. in Nixa. Charlottie's brother was James Wright EDWARDS and I have a picture of the little old log cabins that I believe were on the south side of Hwy 14 about Gregg St.. My grandfather was standing in front of the cabins and the notations that was made on the picture was that his mother played there or something to that fact. His mother was Mary Jane HEDGPETH, daughter of Wiley and Charlottie. I made a trip to Nixa and found the cabins torn down now. Just wonder if anyone knows anything about the cabins that were behind a white house there on 14. I would love to know more about it. Also would like to know who's land the cabin's were on. Another mystery in my research is William P. HEDGPETH, son of Wiley and Charlottie.

I find nothing much on him and think perhaps he never married. I believe could have been involved in some sort of "brawl" in Greene Co. and then perhaps lived with Dr. and Martha Watts. We also are not able to put together a good answer as to the relationship of Judge William or William Judge HEDGPETH and Wiley. If anyone will share their knowledge...good or bad....about that, it would certainly help figure things out. Thanks for any input.

Book 63, p. 316

Calvin Hedgpeth has acquired all the interest Isabel Hedgpeth has in and all the interest of John W. Inmon, F.G. (Finley Glover) Inmon, D.M. (David Marion) Inman, Ann (Inman) Stephenson and David L. Woody and now the owner of land in NE 1/4, NW 1/4 S22 and 15 acres that were part of the E 1/2 of SW 1/4 of S15, T27, R22. (This land, originally owned by Andrew Clinton Hemphill of Christian and then Stone Co. was acquired by Sarah Inman, widow of Elkanah Inman, c. 1870) (As best I can tell, the Inmans lost control of this land under a mortgage default related to farm equipment.)

Book 11, p. 29, default trial by court, March 1, 1900. All of said defendants having failed or refused to plead, answer or demur.

Book 9, pp. 367-9 Isabel Hedgpeth v. Calvin Hedgpeth, divorce. She is granted divorce and custody of Josie, Minda and Lula Hedgpeth, minor children. (Based on newspaper accounts of the time, Calvin had a record of drunken violence.) In lieu of dower, interest in plaintiff's lands, alimony of $100 as counselor fees for Harrington and Young (attorneys). First lien on tract of land NW1/4 NW 1/4 S26-T27-R20
