Notes for WILLIAM HERD WILKERSON:

See the story about ''little Willie Wilkerson''.

Listed in the 1870 Christian Co, MO Fed Census living next to William ''Mack'' Rogers and family.

From Ozark Notes by Charles E. Rogers: "Grandmother got the girls married off to farmers in the neighborhood. Lizzie, the eldest, married Uncle Billie Wilkerson, Civil War veteran. Her Civil War pension came in handy, after her husband's early death. She was left with a daughter and 3 sons to support." They actually had three daughters and three sons. Alice May and Cordelia Melvina both died young.

Enjoyed your data on Wilkersons of SW MO. Do you know the ancestors of William Herd Wilkerson? I am researching Wilkersons of SW MO, mainly Greene Co. My line came from the Wilkersons who moved to MO from Tenn., namely Zacheiah (sp?) and his brothers who all settled in Greene Co. in around 1830. Descendants were Thomas Benjamin b. 1844, sons were Thomas, Wilie, Alonzo, William plus several daughters.

It seems strange to me that back in the 1840's, MO was just getting settled with people, and yet I find such a large number of Wilkersons in that area who don't seem to be related to each other.

Am interested in receiving your story of Lost Willie. Thank you. Joan jmooneygal@aol.com

Joan,

I have attached an MS Word file that contains a letter written in 1937 about my Rogers line. You should be able to read the footnotes by putting your cursor over the footnote #. The footnotes are very important so if you cannot read them, please let me know.

My Rogers ancestors settled in the corner of Greene, Christian, and Webster Co. Rogersville, MO was named after a member of this line. I am certain that "Little Lost Willie" mentioned in this letter is the same William Herd Wilkerson (1847-1891 born in TN) who married Nancy Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rogers (1851-1821. She was the daughter of Robert Doak Rogers and Juritta Wilson Watts. Lizzie was born in Christian Co and died in Webster Co. Both William and Lizzie are buried in the Watts Cem near Rogersville.

William and Lizzie are listed in the 1870 Christian Co, MO Fed Census living next to William ''Mack'' Rogers and family. Mack was the brother of Robert Doak Rogers and therefore the Uncle of Lizzie. As stated in the attached letter, Mack had just moved his family back to SW MO after spending several years in Texas.

Children of William Herd Wilkerson and Lizzie are:

William Jackson Wilkerson 1869

Alice May Wilkerson 1871

Cordelia Melvina Wilkerson 1874

Mary Magdaline Wilkerson 1877

John Clyde Wilkerson 1883

Robert Elmer Wilkerson 1886

Another brother of Robert Doak Rogers and William McKindree Rogers was Reuben Brawley Rogers (my gr-grandfather). He was listed in the 1870 Webster Co census. Living next door was John Wilkerson and his family. John was 46 and born in TN. His wife, Lorinda was 35 and born in VA. Their oldest was Mary E. and born in AR. The rest of the children were born in MO. Also living with this family was a Joseph Lee 35 born in VA. Could have been a brother of Lorinda......?

As you will see from the letter, the Rogers came from Marion County, Tennessee and before that Claiborne County, Tennessee. Hope this is some help.

Jerry

Hello, Jerry. First off, I want to thank you so much for the Willie document. I can see that there is no connection to my grandfather, Wilie Wilkerson, but the letter is a jewel just the same. My gggrandfather, Zachariah Wilkerson, moved with his parents, Thomas Wilkerson and Elizabeth, from Jackson Co. TN. to Greene Co. in abt. 1833. According to my sources (secondary), Thomas was one of the very early members of the Church of Christ and is said to have helped organize the Center Point Church of Christ near Rogersville in around 1830.

It seems that our Wilkersons came from the same area of TN. and moved to Greene Co. in about the same time span. They must have been related, yet I find no connections so far. FYI: Thomas was b. 1762 in Caswell Co, North Carolina, d. aft. 1833 in Greene Co. MO He m. Elizabeth Potter Mackey abt. 1810 in Jackson co. TN. He was a Rev. War Veteran; after the war he lived in Russell Co VA, Greene Co TN, Davidson Co TN Robertson Co TN Jackson Co TN, and Greene Co MO.

My group had Thomas Wilkerson, Sr., wife Elizabeth Mackey Potter as the patriarch; he migrated from VA to KY, eventually to TN, Jackson County to be specific, where he had his children. His youngest son was named Joel, born 1825 in TN. My ancestor, his brother, Zacheus, also born in TN, 1815.

Around the 1830's they migrated to Montgomery Co IL, then went to Greene Co MO, then back to Mont. Co, then back to Greene Co.
