I will try to fill you in on my family starting with John (M. or W. ) the family hand family listing that I found in the family papers list him as John Marshall married to Sarah Tabitha Carr. I still have some sorting to do and may find additional information from my first cousins. The only two children listed were James Marshall and Edwin Wilburn Rogers. I think that there are only two listed because of the Kansas connection.
My great Grandfather was James. The Best information that I have on him is the family listing and a copy of his will. He was married twice. My Great grandmother was Eliza McAlexander.
The will list his children as:
Jessie D. Rogers My grandfather
Laura Rogers
Sarah Rogers
John M. Rogers
Mary Eliza Rogers
Margret Rogers
May Rogers
Flara Rogers
I do not have a date of death but believe that he lived in West Plains Mo. at the time of death. The will bequeaths some property there.
My Grand father Jesse was born 2/1/1876 and died 8/23/1921 in Missouri, but lived in Lyon County Kansas at the time that may father was born. I do not know what prompted the moves to Kansas and back to Missouri.
The Children of Jessie were:
- Warren Clay Rogers b Nov. 12.1902 Lyon County Kansas d. Aug 4, 1984 Lyon County Kansas. I am an only child b 2/17/35
- James Wallace Rogers b 1/12/04 Lyon County Kansas d. 1/14/71 Lyon
County Kansas. Children:
Patrica. b. 4/1/27 probably in West Plains Mo. d. 1999 Her mother died in West Plains
Helen b 3/20/43
Ann b before Helen - Galdys May b. 6/17/06
- Margret b. 6/24/12
I do not know if my aunts were born in Missouri or Kansas both died in California. Gladys had two children John and Jane. I think that the family until my father were farmers. The newspaper clipping from my grandfather's death list him as a farmer and rural mail carrier.
If I find out how to send the family history print out I will send it to you. I do plan to do some of my own research on some of the dates and times. I am still trying to find all of the starting points so I can be efficient. Phil Rogers.
From Ken Kirkland May 02: For example, I'm pretty sure that the son of David Rogers that is listed as John W. (Jackson) Rogers is John Marshall Rogers, who would be my GGGrandfather through his son James Marshall Rogers, who was my Grandmother Mary E. Rogers Ray's father. John M. Rogers was murdered by one of Dr. Charles Jennison's raiders on July 15, 1864. I have an account of this, which is 4 type written pages.

Rogers Cousins--This is in response to the question Jerry raised regarding the middle name and birth date of John Rogers, son of Maj. David.
First, I have seen the name as John, John W., John M. and John Marshall, all believed to be the same person. However, most of those with a middle name or initial are from secondary family reports, so I have elected to go back to plane "John Rogers" until someone shows me something more conclusive. I will now give some of the info. about John and his life.
One source of information about John comes from a book entitled "CEMETERY RECORDS OF PLATTE COUNTY, MISSOURI, Compiled by the Platte county Historical Society 1945-1960. On page 60, it lists 5 cemeteries surveyed by Mrs. E. G. Aker and Mrs. John Rader. Among those 5 are: Rogers Cemetery and Rush Creek Cemetery. The Rogers Cemetery is stated to be on the Earl Snider farm on Tiffany Springs Road. (Note: I visited this farm when I was first starting tracing ancestors in the early 1970's and Mrs. Earl Snider, a widow, was living on the farm. I asked to visit the cemetery, she refused and insisted that one did not exist. I showed her the list and statement about it being on her farm, and she still refused. Talking with neighbors indicated that it was probably plowed up and tombstones eliminated. I also drove past the same farm earlier this year.)
Here is what the
book says:
-------------------------
John Rogers, d. July 15, 1861, aged 61 years, 11 days. Sarah
Rogers, his wife, d. 26 Mar. 1881, age 77 years, 8 mo. 25 days.
James M. Rogers, d. Feb. 5, 1876, age 30 years, 11month. Eliza
Rogers, his wife, d. __ no date given Little Flora Rogers, dau. of James
and ___? Rogers, d. 17 Oct. 1870, aged 1 yr, 5 mo. 6 da.
--------------------------
From the above, one would calculate his birth date as July 4, 1800. However, tombstone data has been known to be wrong as well as potential errors of reading and recording the data.
There are some reasons to believe the dates may be in error. There is a land deed in Platte Co. that shows John Rogers and his wife Sarah as selling land to William H. Witt. It is dated 19 March 1864. From that record, you would believe him to be still alive.
Willima H. Witt, was a local family and their daughter Martha Lucretia Ann Witt married John's son Edwin Wilbur Rogers (my ancestral line). I have a copy of their marriage record and obituaries for them as well as a write-up from the Jefferson Co. Kansas History book of 1887.
William Hughes Witt and wife are buried in the Rush Creek cemetery, about a mile away from the Earl Snider farm. Also buried there is G. W. Masterson. The same book indicated above, lists his date of death as July 14, 1861, aged 45 years. From Platte Co. cemetery records, they indicate that David Greeg died July 14, 1864 . Here is where it gets interesting.
I have only one page (#725)
from a book entitled, HISTORY OF PLATTE COUNTY. (I plan to get
additional
pages, but the library is closed all winter and only recently reopened
for the summer.) My Mother had told me that she had always
understood that her great-grandfather was shot by someone during the
Civil
War. Here is what the book says about his death.
----------------------
From Platte City this delectable band of scoundrels started to Liberty on a drunken saturnalian expedition of crime and villainy. Jennison's men went by way of Parkville and Barry, and Ford's directly by Barry. Jennison himself accompanied Ford's command, and the men, while on their Parkville detour, were under one Thompson, famed for his murders of unarmed citizens, and as a terror to women and children.
On His way to Parkville, Thompson killed three law-abiding reputable citizens of the county, shot them down in cold blood on the public road. John Rogers and ___Masterson lived near Parkville, and were returning home from town that day when they were met and shot down by Thompson's men. Neither of them had ever been identified with the South in any way, and both were peaceable unoffending citizens. They were each between 50 and 60 years of age, and both were men of families. Masterson was a one-legged man, and had been constable of the township for a number of years. He was popular with all classes and was elected by both political parties. Rogers was a quiet, plain-going farmer, fairly well-to-do, and without a known enemy in the world.
A few miles further along Thompson met another farmer, David Greeg, who had been to mill at Parkville that day, and was returning home with his grists in an ox wagon. He was ordered to get out of his wagon and was shot by the side of the road and left there a corpse. His ox team stood there, hitched to the wagon, until neighbors found him and his team that afternoon. He was a white-haired old man, verging on 70 years of age, and had nothing whatever to do with the war.
-------------------------Based on the death dates given for the three men, we have the year as 1861 and 1864. Since we believe that John Rogers was alive to sign the deed in March of 1864, a death date of July 14, 1864 may be more likely accurate. If so and the age at death was correct, we would have a birth date as July 4, 1803.
----------------------On Feb. 16, 1867, his heirs are selling some of his land, listing 14
persons including his wife, Sarah.
So we can confirm that he died prior to 1867.
In information
I have that is quoted as coming from Stephen H. Rogers of Speedwell,
Tenn. regarding the
children of Major David, it lists John Rogers, b. July 1, 1803, d. 16
Sept. 1868. We know the death date is incorrect, but I don't know
the source for his date of birth for John.
------------
I plan to return to Platte Co. this summer and do some more digging to
see if I can find anything more
conclusive.

Dear Mr. Wilhoit,
Yesterday I called the Historical Society and was given your name as a researcher that might give us some help in our genealogical research.
My Great Great Grandfather was John Rogers. On July 15, 1864, John Rogers and a Mr. Masterson were killed by a band of Union soldiers who were led by a Cols Jennison and Thompson. From the Denver Public Library, I have the account of this, which is on pages 720 - 726 in the "History of Clay and Platte Counties, Missouri", published by the St. Louis National Historical Company in 1885.
The lady that I talked to yesterday said that there are microfilm copies of newspapers there. The Rogers descendants are active in genealogical research and would like to know as much a possible about the circumstances of this important event in our family history. Would it be possible for you to lat me know what material is available in the museum and what arrangements might be made for research either by someone there or by one of us visiting the museum.
Some of our family records indicate that John Rogers' full name was John "Marshall" Rogers. We are not certain that it is a fact that his middle name was Marshall. We do know that his son's name was James Marshall Rogers, who also lived and is buried there in Missouri.

In looking over the posted information on some of the members of the family, I have received information to supplement what is in the posting. Most of the data is not researched to assure accuracy, but is likely. Would appreciate if anyone has any data to refute what I show as additional (shown as bold & underlined).
