Who was Hugh Lawson White? His father was James White a pioneer, born in Iredell County, NC in 1737. James died in Knoxville Tn in 1815. He was a soldier during the Rev War. His pay was from NC land warrant, located in the summer of 1787 on the northern band of the Holson River about 4 miles below the mouth of the French Broad. Here he erected a fort, built a grist mill and began settlement.
Hugh Lawson, son of James, was also born in Iredell Co NC Oct 30 1773 and died in Knoxville Tn 10 April 1840. He studied law in a small log office. When he was 17 war with the Cherokee's broke out and he volunteered as a private under Gen Sevier and was with him when he defeated the Indians at the Battle of Etowah. During the battle Hugh killed the Chief, King Fisher. After the war he went to Philadelphia to study the classics and maSubjecttics and read law in the office of James Hopkins in Lancaster Pa. He returned to Knoxville and began to practice.
For a short time he was the private secretary to Gov Blount. At the age of 26 he was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in Tn, which he held for 6 years until he received the appointment of US District Attorney. In 1809 he was chosen State Senator and served until 1825. During the session of 1807 he compiled the land laws of the state and in 1817 he drafted the act against dueling. In 1815 he was elected president of the Bank of Tennessee at Knoxville.
He ran for President and we know from the Christmas letter (with photo of Maj David's cabin- that Janna Cox Renner has) written by Rosalie Ausmus Keever that Major David named his son after him and supported him when he ran for president.

Jerry,
To answer your question it looks like my Rogers migrated to Missouri, also.
Hugh Lawson White Rogers, Sr, son of Maj David Rogers settled near Lathrop, Clinton Co, Missouri. I suppose it might be close to where his brother, Isaac Newton Rogers, settled. Hugh L W Rogers, Sr is buried in Lathrop, Clinton Co , Mo. Other documentation is as follows: (From my greatgrandmothers marriage lic and obit)
1. Mollie (Mary) Winna Rogers 8th child was married in Clinton Co Missouri on Feb 13, 1877 to David Jacob Wesley Stoner at the Brides house by Mason Summers, M.G. Found Book 1 Page 509-State of Missouri-County of Clinton.
2.OBIT: Mollie (Mary) Winna Rogers was the last child of Hugh Lawson White Rogers to be born in Tennessee. She was born in 1855 and moved with her parents to Clinton County Missouri in 1856. She married Jacob W Stoner in 1877, etc. ect.
3. Tennessee Alice 9th child of HLW Rogers b. 1856 was born in Missouri while the previous 8 were born in Tn.
So I would like you to add this to your list.
Thanks
Lyla

Most of the information I have was collected by my great-grandmother Laura Barbara (Stoner) Cox. The early history of the Rogers family down to the time of Hugh L.W. Rogers was from the records of Stephen H. Rogers, of Speedwell, Tennessee.
During the Civil War, Hugh L.W. Rogers was a captain of the Clay-Clinton Co, MO Regiment on the Union side.

After reviewing the estate papers of Hu L W Roger b Feb 1822 (son of Maj David) and a photo of his tombstone, I believe that this is the correct spelling of his name. He signed his will "Hu Rogers".
I decided I would bring this to your attention in case you want to make the corrections in your data. Until I have further documentation stating otherwise, I will continue to show his son as "Hugh"

Dear Cousins:
To follow up on Ray's email of this morning. I am also a descendant of Hugh Lawson White Rogers and Barbara B Caywood. (Their daughter Marry Winnia Rogers -known as Mollie Rogers on her marriage license to Jacob Wesley Stoner-David Jacob Wesley Stoner in the family Bible)
The connection is that David and Mary (Mollie) W. Rogers's mother was Barbara B Caywood {probably the B stands for Beeler} was the daughter of Stephen Caywood Jr. and Winnie Beeler married 1819 in Tn. Stephen Caywood Jr. son of Stephen Caywood Sr & Sarah Keller. Winnie Beeler was the daughter of Peter Beeler and Barbara Elizabeth Petree.
Of course there are other marriages between the Rogers-Caywood-Beelers.
