Jerry, I don't know if I got this correctly in. Susanna was the daughter of James and Mary THORNBRUGH as, hopefully, shown in the two images I pasted from vol.1, p.578 of the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy by Hinslaw.

Chapter 8

Thornburgh Family

The Thornburgh family is connected to the Stuart family [Chapter 6] by the marriage of Susannah Thornburgh/Thornborough to Isaac Stuart on 8 May 1770 in Guilford County, North Carolina. The Stuart family is connected to the Curry family by the marriage of Louisa M. Stuart to Thomas Jefferson Curry about 1855, and probably in Arkansas. The Curry family is connected to the Manly family through the marriage of Elizabeth Rebecca Curry to John James Bell Manly [Chapter 2] on 16 November 1881 in Grimes County, Texas. The Manly family is then connected to the Wingard family [Chapter 1] through the marriage of Minnie Estelle Manly to George Franklin Wingard, Sr., on 11 March 1922.

The Thornburgh name is spelled variously, and almost interchangeably: Thornburgh; Thornburg, Thornborough, and even Thornbury.

Almost all of the early family information, below, was obtained from the Mormon Church, or Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) Internet web site. We will use this as a skeleton on which to build our Thornburgh family history as time and resources become available.

John Thornburg was the progenitor of our Thornburgh family. He was born about 1370 in Lancashire, England. He married Elizabeth Pierpoint, and they were the parents of only one known son:

[Comment: The LDS web site lists William's birth date as 20 June 1599, and as "ca. 1620." Only the latter will fit.]

William and Catherine (Langtree) Thornburgh were parents of the following known chil-dren:

1 Rowland Thornburg; b. ca. 1642 in Lancashire, England

2 Richard Thornburgh; b. ca. 1643 in Lancashire, England

Robert Thornborough, son of Charles Thornburgh and Elizabeth Leyburne, was born about 1661 in Lancashire, England. On 25 July 1685 he married Sarah Jackson in Ulster Province, Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland.

"Robert Thornborough of Old Castle MM in 1685; imprisoned for not paying tithes in 1715. Of Lurgan MM, County Armagan, Ireland. He married about 7th month 1685 to Sarah Jackson of Cootehill, County, Cavan, Ireland, possibly the daughter of Anthony Jackson."

Robert and Sarah (Jackson) Thornborough were parents of the following known children:

It is not known when either Robert or Sarah (Jackson) Thornborough died, though both are thought to have died in Ulster Province, Cootehill, Cavan, Ireland.

For a bit of insight into why Robert Thornborough moved from England to Ireland, the following very relevant summary was found on the Internet:

˜²™

"Robert Thornborough and his brother Edward emigrated to Ireland from England. Robert married Sarah Jackson in about 1685. Their sons Edward, Thomas and Walter were born in Ireland and lived there until they emigrated to America between 1714 and 1726. These sons of Robert are the ancestors of most Thornburg families who are in the United States now (including Thornburgh, Thorn-borough, Thornberry and other variations of the name). I have long been curious as to why the Thornbor-ough family found themselves in Ireland between the 1680's and the 1720's. Was it political changes in England? Were they escaping from religious oppression?

"The following list of historical facts help give me an understanding of why the Thornborough's had reason enough to leave England.

· "Robert Thornborough's early ancestors in England were Catholic and at one time were people of position and wealth.

· "Certain British royalty found reason to be at odds with the Catholic Church (volumes have been written about this)

· "In 1609 the six northern counties of Ireland (Ulster) were confiscated by the English government and settled with English and Scottish immigrants.

· "1611: publication of the King James version of the Bible.

· "1625-1649: reign of Charles I (son of King James) which included forced loans from taxpayers and later a statute that required landholders to be knighted. To be knighted required a large fee; to refuse meant a steep fine.

· "1636-1641: Robert's grandfather, William Thornburgh, was forced to sell most of his inherited holdings and estates.

· "1646: George Fox started first Quaker churches in England.

· "Robert's father, Charles, and his Uncle Richard became followers of George Fox.

· "1654: the Quaker movement started in Ireland.

· "1661: Parliament enacts Clarendon Code to penalize Puritans, Dissenters and Roman Catholics.

· "1663: George Fox went to Cartmel, England, where he held meetings and was jailed three times.

· "Additional Quaker Meetings formed in Ulster with Thornburgh(s) mentioned in the minutes.

· "1686: Robert married in Ireland (Ulster Province) as a Quaker.

· "1715: Robert imprisoned apparently for not paying 'tythes'

"After collecting this information, and after starting to compose my own theory on how the Thornboroughs were affected by the events of their time, and why they might have left England, I found a quote from the work of Dwight Thornburg that pretty concisely answers the question.

"'Some members of the Cartmel and Kendal families became ardent followers of George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers) during the years 1663 to 1700; and some were forced or induced by religious persecutors to leave the environs of Cartmel. Robert Thornburgh or Thornborough was one of those early escapees (or departees, if you like). His record in Cotehill and later in Monaghan both evidenced his strong pro-Quaker activities and church promi-nence.'"

Edward Thornborough was born in 1691 in Cootehill, Cavan, Armagh, Ireland, the son of Robert Thornborough and Sarah Jackson. In 1708 he married Sarah Mary Hannah Haman of Lurgan Monthly Meeting, County Armagh, Ireland.

[Comment: Note in the will of Edward Thornborough that follows, he names his wife as Jean! Jean/Jane may very well have been a second wife, and she may not have been the mother of his children. We simply do not know.]

Edward and Sarah Mary Hannah (Haman) Thornborough were parents of the following known children:

1. George Thornborough; b. ca. 1701 in Lancaster Co., Pa.

2. Jean Thornburg; b. ca. 1712 in Lancaster Co., Pa.

3. Edward Thornburg; b. ca. 1713 in Lancaster Co., Pa.

4. William Thornburgh; b. ca. 1714 in Hopewell, Frederick Co., Va.; d. 12 Feb 1786 in Guil-ford Co., NC

5. Thomas Thornbrough; b. 10 Jul 1715 in Cootehill, Cavan, Ireland; d. 9 Mar 1797 in Guil-ford Co., NC (buried 11 Mar 1797 at the New Garden Monthly Meeting, Guilford Co., NC); m. Abigail Brown at Middle Creek, Frederick Co., Va.

'1740/1, 1,18. Thomas (Thornbrug), s. Thomas, Middle Creek on Opeckan, Frederick Co., Va., m. Abigail Brown. [m. in Va.]"

6. John Thornburg; b. ca. 1718

7. Margaret Thornburgh; b. ca. 1720

8. Robert Thornburgh; b. ca. 1722; d. 3 Aug 1743; m. Susannah Davis 11 Oct 1729 at the Birmingham Monthly Meeting

9. Elizabeth Thornburg; b. ca. 1724

10. Joseph Thornburgh; b. 7 Jan 1728 at Hopewell, Frederick Co., Va.; d. 25 Jun 1800 at New Garden Monthly Meeting, Guilford Co., NC

11. Walter Thornburg; b. ca. 1732

12. Edward Thornburgh; b. ca. 1734 at Hopewell, Frederick Co., Va.

Edward Thornborough died 28 December 1734 in Warwick, Lancaster County, Pennsylva-nia. Sarah Mary Hannah (Haman) Thornborough died sometime after 1734 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

We find a brief history of Edward Thornborough on the Internet, which confuses the issue of lineage considerably:

˜²™

"According to some Thornbrough genealogies, Edward Thornbrough was the son of Robert and Sarah Jackson Thornbrough who supposedly married in Ulster, Ireland, 8/1685. (This date does not hold up well when examining the probable dates of Edward's children!) We have not yet done research in Ireland but it is likely that Robert Thornbrough went to Ireland from England as a result of Quaker persecution in England. The Thornbroughs have a long and well documented history in England.

Edward Thornbrough
Born Cootehill, Ireland
Died 1734 Lancaster County, Pa. Jean (Jane) Unknown

Children:

Thomas Thornbrough born about 1701, Armaugh, Ireland
Robert Thornbrough born about 1704 Armaugh, Ireland
George Thornbrough born before 1713 Armaugh, Ireland
Walter Thornbrough born about 1708, Armaugh, Ireland

"A certificate for Edward Thornbury was received 9th month, 6th day, 1725, at Kennett (formerly Newark) Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania. The certificate was from Lurgan Meeting, County Armagh, Ireland. Edward supposedly had two brothers, Thomas and Walter, and a sister Judith married to Alexan-der Miller. His brother Thomas was probably the Thomas Thornberry received at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania on 6/26/1732 from Haddonfield Monthly Meeting in New Jersey. There is some evidence that his sister Judith immigrated, as Thomas and wife Sarah sold some land in Lancaster County to a Miller, who was probably her son. While some genealogies say that a brother Walter also immi-grated, there is not a single Quaker record, land record, marriage record, or any other evidence of such a brother in America. He may simply have been mistaken for Edward's son Walter."

"In his will written in 1734, Edward refers to his brother Thomas as 'cosen.' This terminology in old wills is often used regardless of the relationship of the two parties, similar to the expression 'my good friend' when the party may actually be a relative. The records have unfortunately been copied by typing in Lancaster County so it is difficult to know which is the old spelling and which is an error in transcrip-tion."

A transcript of the 1734 will of Edward Thornborough follows:

???

Thomas Thornbrough, was born 10 July 1715 in Cootehill, Cavan, Ireland. On 18 January 1740, he married Abigail Brown at Middle Creek, Frederick County, Virginia.

There is contention regarding Thomas' mother and father. Most sources claim that he was the son of Edward Thornborough and Sarah Mary Hannah Haman. But one source asserts he was the son of Edward Thornborough and Elizabeth ____, while another asserts he was the son of Edward Thornborough and Jean Morgan [see will above]. Still others assert that he was the son of Thomas Thornborough and Sarah Mary Hannah Haman. Since we cannot resolve this dispute at this time, we will go "with the flow" and assume that Thomas' parents were Edward Thornborough and Sarah Mary Hannah Haman.

Abigail Brown was born in 1717 in Hopewell, Frederick County, Virginia, the daughter of James Brown, who was born ca. 1687-1689 and died before 2 September 1767 at Middle Creek, Frederick County, Virginia.

"Thomas Thornbrough, probably the son of Thomas and Sarah (Hannah) Thornbrough, requested a certificate from Sadsbury MM, PA, 7 2nd month 1740 to an undesignated meeting. He married 18 1st month 1740/1 Middle Creek at Opeckan to Abigail Brown, daughter of James Brown.

"Thomas and his family apparently returned to Sadsbury MM in Lancaster Co., Pa., for an undetermined length of time. In 1752 a certificate was granted to Hopewell MM, Frederick Co., Va., by Sadsbury MM. In 1754, Thomas and William Thornbrough were received on certificates from Hopewell MM at New Garden MM, NC, where Thomas was listed as one of the original members of this meeting."

[Comment: The above information is not quite true. Thomas Thornborough was first a member of the Cane Creek Monthly meeting, as evidenced by the following Cane Creek minute notations: "1752, 11, 4. Thomas (Thornbrugh) rocf {'received on certificate of'} Hopewell MM, Va., dated 1752, 7, 6." His brother, William was received on the same date. Thomas 'Thornrugh' was among those who were charter members of New Garden MM when it was formed in 1754. ]

The known children (all listed in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy) of Thomas and Abigail (Brown) Thornborough were:

1. Joseph Thornburgh; b. 7 Jan 1742; d. 6 Aug 1823 in Wayne Co., In.; m. (1) Welmet Besson "23 6th month 1763" at New Garden Monthly Meeting, Guilford Co., NC [d. 6 Feb 1775 ], (2) "5 2nd month 1778" Rebecca Mills Morgan, widow of William Morgan

For some reason, Abigail (Brown) Thornborough was disowned by the New Garden Monthly Meeting in early 1764:

"1764, 1, 28. Abigail (Thornbrough) dis"

In the following Guilford County, North Carolina, records Thomas Thornborough is apparently selling land to his sons, Joseph and James:

"11 August 1772, Thomas Thornburgh of Guilford to Joseph Thornburgh of same, eighty pounds, 100 acres, joins Brush Cr. Waters of Haw R., begin at a sweet gum nigh creek, E 157 rods to a stake, N 112 rods to a stake, W 117 rods to a stake adjoining creek, along creek to first station, part of a tract from Granville to Thornburgh 1761. Abigail Brown died 21 April 1780 at the New Garden Monthly Meeting, Guilford County, North Carolina. After her death Thomas Thornborough married Martha Stanley on 1 January 1783 in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Thomas Thornborough died 9 March 1797 in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Susannah Thornburgh, daughter of Thomas Thornburgh and Abigail Brown, was born 22 September 1751 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She married Isaac Stuart 8 May 1770 in Guilford County, North Carolina.

First, Solomon Lewis (b. 1750 in Comberland Co, NC) married Catherine Moon (b. 1761) in 1780. Their twin daughters Mary Elizabeth (Polly) Lewis and Catherine (Molly) Lewis were born in Guilford Co, NC on 1 Jan 1781.

The two daughters married two brothers: William (b. 1777) and David Rogers (b. 1779). Both brothers were born in Montgomery, (now Wythe Co), VA. The marriage of David and Molly took place May 1800 in his brother's (William) house near Speedwell, Claiborne County, Tennessee. William was a minister and J. P. and also performed the ceremony.

Both families lived the rest of their days in Claiborne Co along with the wives parents.

2. James Thornburgh married Mary Ruth Moon (b. 16 Jan 1751/2 in Hopewell, Frederick, VA d. 1 Jul 1830 in New Garden, Guilford Co, NC). Her parents were Richard Moon and Susanna Beeson.

James and Mary's daughter, Susanna (Susan) Thornburgh, married Nathan Rayl (b. 13 Apr 1775 in New Garden, Guilford Co, NC). The wedding took place 1 Jan 1800 in New Garden, Guilford Co, NC.

I do not know if these two Moon lines are related, but would appreciate any information you might be able to provide. Thanks for your help.

Jerry
