Cousins,
I've been reading several old emails posted to www.genforum and am surprised how
many Nicodemus descendants are still looking for their ancestors in Greece,
Spain, etc.
Our roots have been well documented by Ivan Nicodemus of Irving Texas working
with several others especially Judy (Nicodemus Kendall). After several years of
hard research, Ivan published his notes on the family in "Nicodemus Notes in
America" in 1995.
According to Ivan, nearly all (about 95%) of folks with the name Nicodemus in
North America can trace their roots to Johann Henrich (not Heinrich) Nicodemus
b. 30 May 1677 at Medenbach, Nassau (now part of the state of Hessen in
Germany). Johann Henrich died in Medenbach 22 Mar 1715, but his son, Johann Adam
Nicodemus b. 30 Oct 1705 and at least four of his sons came to America in the
1750s.
Medenbach is a very small village near the town of Herborn which is NW of
Frankfurt between Dillenburg and Wetzlar in the Westerwald region of the state
of Hessen in Germany. I have been to Medenbach three times and there are still
families in the area who are no doubt related. Some spell the name Nikodemus.
You can visit the town of Herborn on line at:
http://www.herborn.de/
This site is of course in German, but there are some interesting photos even if
you don't understand the language. Click on "Portrait" at the top of the web
page and you'll get the history of the area with more pictures.
Yes, there are lots of folks in Greece with the name Nicodemus, but it is not
likely that we are related to them.
