Sources and Additional Information:
Charles Augustus (Gus) Nicodemus (1898-1985) was the only son to leave the farm and travel to "big city". He spent several years in Chicago as a street car conductor. After retirement, he returned home to Buffalo, Dallas Co, Missouri were he spent the rest of his life.
He, like most of his siblings had a great sense of humor and loved to kid his brothers and especially his sisters. Just a couple of years before his death, he drove to Springfield to visit his sister, Esther Eva Carner. During the visit, he told her that he had looked at the okra in her garden and it looked "pretty punier" compared to her sister Lena's okra which was already producing big pods.
After he left, she went and pulled up all of her "punier" okra. Upon returning to Buffalo, Gus went and told Lena that Esther's okra was much further along than her "punier" okra and guess what she did? Yep, she pulled her "punier" okra up too. A few days later, the Esther and Lena compared notes and Gus was in big trouble, but the okra crop was pretty meager that year.
