Now for a quick peek at the tale as told by an old-timer who died back in the 1950's and a couple of other Cases who had been told the story:

Old Thomas had a wife and a mistress. To tell his children apart, the ones by the mistress were called Tootie Case. They all lived and worked the same farm. It is believed that the mistress was probably surnamed Taneyhill/Tannehill/Toneyhill and that she was an Indian. (possibly Cherokee). James Case is shown on 1820 MS census with several young adults who are certainly too old to be his children. Also, 3 Tannehill girls married and each of them had a Case to stand up with her: James, Jesse and Hiram (he listed himself as Hiram Taneyhill and then in another place as Hiram Case). Some of the descendants of these 3 girls have only heard the name Case, not Taneyhill. My husband's grandmother was Hiram's grand-daughter. Francie, and she married Wilburn (Bob) Case who's grandfather was Martin Case who showed up on 1840 MS census as being born in GA, so no one knows if he is a brother, half-brother, cousin or what. Most researchers think that all the MS Cases were brothers and/or half-brothers. Wilburn (Bob) Case always said his wife, Francie Case, was a Tootie Case. That would make Hiram a son of the mistress (Taneyhill) and Martin either a son of the legal wife or a cousin. No one knows if the tale is true, but it sounds good. If anyone has another version, I would love to hear it.
