Harold,

You can not get out of being a Case cousin that easy! Besides the points you mentioned, here's a few more reasons I believe Eliza Rowland was Eliza Case, daughter of William Case, Sr. and Nancy _____:

In the 1850 McNairy Co., TN census, p. 37 -

William Rowland and his family live in Dwelling #945.

John Rowland (with wife Eliza, age 25 & dau Nancy, age 1) live in Dwelling #946.

James Rowland (with wife "Visy" Case, age 21) live in Dwelling #947.

William Case (with wife Nancy) and family live in Dwelling #948.

Martin Case and family live in Dwelling #949.

Jesse Shaw (with wife Elizabeth Case, age 30) live in Dwelling #950.

Thomas Case and family live in Dwelling #951.

(In addition, p. 36 ends with Perry Case and family living in dwelling #944.)

So, the Rowland and Case families not only lived in the same area of McNairy Co., they all lived right next door to each other.

In this same 1850 census, Eliza Rowland is listed as being born in MS. The only other people in the immediate area on that census who were also born in MS are Thomas Case, Martin Case and Elizabeth Case Shaw.

In the 1860 Dallas Co., MO census, (E)liza Ro(w)land is listed as being 36, b. in GA, along with children Nancy J., Mary, William, John and James. (The GA birthplace most probably census info error, depending on who gave the information.)

I don't have the 1870 Dallas Co., MO census. Eliza must died sometime before or during 1872, as John Rowland then married Barbara Jackson Case, widow of Martin Case on 12 Jan 1873.

By comparing the 1850 & 1860 census reports, Eliza must have been born about 1823 or so. The McNairy Co., 1830 census gives these children for William Case Sr.:

1 son 11-15 (Thomas?)
2 dau 6-10 (Elizabeth & Eliza?)
1 son 6-10 (Martin?)
1 son 0- 5 (Perry?)
2 dau 0- 5 (Lovica "Visy" & Cynthia?)

The McNairy Co., TN 1840 census gives these children for William Case, Sr.:

1 son 21-30 (Thomas?)
2 dau 16-20 (Elizabeth & Eliza?)
1 son 16-20 (Martin?)
1 son 11-15 (Perry?)
2 dau 6-10 (Lovica "Visy" & Cynthia?)
1 son 6-10 (William, Jr.?)
2 son 0- 5 (John & Isham?)

There is obviously a daughter in William Case, Sr.'s household who would have been the right age to be Eliza, born about 1823.

I know this is not undeniable PROOF, but I think there's enough circumstantial evidence, including the information Harold presented, that a jury would probably convict Eliza Rowland of being Eliza Case, William Case, Sr.'s daughter...at least, if that jury had a brain in their head. <g> More later.

Cheryl,

Most of the Rowlands you listed are my relatives. The only ones I can't identify at this time is Cora and Walter. I assume they are buried in the Pleasant Hope Cemetery since I know where all the others are buried.

The remainder of this note may not be of interest to most of you, so will make it as brief as possible.

Buried in Union Grove Cemetery are John S. Rowland, my gr-gr-grandfather, and Miriam Rowland his daughter-in-law, wife of William Rowland, my gr-grandparents. John's birth date is a puzzlement. His stone says Apr.10, 1824 as does a newspaper notice of his death. Therefore I have accepted that date as the date his children considered as accurate. However at least 2 census records and a History of Chester Co. Tn. write up on his family indicate 1827 as his birth date. This family history also gives James' birth date as 1829 which corresponds to his age on the 1850 census. So I am still not sure date to believe. I have received verbal reports that Eliza (Case?) Rowland was buried in the Union Grove Cemt. but no record can be found to support this information.

Buried in Rock Prairie:

William, son of John, and his second wife Susan Barham Rowland
J. Wesley Rowland, son of Wm., and his wife Rosa, also their son Claude. Also since the book you quoted their other 2 sons Lester and Alva Lee.

Lettie, first wife of Troy who is the son of Wm. and Susan.

Sarah, first wife of Edgar son of Wm and Miriam.

Dorothy Fern, infant dau. of Edgar

I am very familiar with the Rock Prairie Cemetery as my grandmother Lillie Rowland Cobb, dau. of Wm. and Miriam, as well as her 4 children are all buried there. This of course includes my parents. This cemetery is located only about 3-4 miles south of the Case Cemetery which we have written about before.

Have a nice day.

Harold
