Hi Jerry,
Thanks for sending the information regarding the Barnett/Case families. It was also great to see your new web site.
I have a question for you. I notice you have old William Case (b. abt 1792 in GA) listed as "William Wesley Case." I was wondering where you found reference to his middle name being Wesley? I know there was a grandson named William Wesley Case, but I have never seen that middle name (or middle initial) for old William Case.
Incidentally, I think I may have found the maiden name of old William Case's wife, Nancy _______ (b. abt 1796 in NC). According to TWO of the MO death certificates of their children (Nancy Case Highfill and John Case), her maiden name was Jackson. The information came from two different informants, W. B. Highfill and C. D. Case, at two different times. (Nancy Case Highfill died 31 May 1912, and John Case died 28 Apr 1913). The separate informants and circumstances would lend credence to the information that Nancy's maiden name truly was Jackson, and that the information was not just a mistake (or family legend) made by one person.

Help! William Case b1792GA>TN>Polk Co.MO
Posted by: C. F. Luginbill Date: October 08, 1998 at 17:33:59 of 1135
Looking for parents of William Case, born about 1792 in GA. Was on 1830, 1840 & 1850 McNairy Co., TN census then moved to Polk Co., MO about 1853. Still there for 1860 & 1870 Polk Co. census. Have not found death dates yet. Family legend says he was 1/2 Cherokee. Also need info on his wife, Nancy _____, born abt 1796 in NC. I have alot of data on their children, but nothing about William's and Nancy's ancestry. Is there anyone out there who has data on the "southern" Case clan? Any help appreciated.

Jerry,
The monitor on my computer is an older model so is could not get a real clear image from the picture you sent and so could only recognize the Nicodemus'. There was one man with his hat cocked to one side that may be Elza Eagon, husband of Alice Barnett. That is the way he wore his hat and I suspect they were at that gathering. Their son Ruby married my dad's sister which is my only connection to the Barnett family other than the Case connection.
When you mentioned that your mother was Lorene Tuckness, I knew that name was very familiar, then Lavern Nicodemus told me that she lived with them for a short period of time. Thats how I knew her, she came to church with Lavern and Cora Mae, but as you know that was a long time ago.
I said that I am not related to the Barnett family, I knew several of them and my father no doubt knew all of them. You probably have the little information I am about to provide, but here is what I know. Billie and Mary Jane had about 8 children, not necessarily in this order: George, he was the main leader of the "Old Time Singing" at Red Top when I was a boy, I may have seen Billie a few times in my life; Willie, Joe, and Floyd, I don't think I ever knew them; Rosa, I remember her and Harry and recall when they died; Alice, as I said married Elsa Eagon [ I'm not sure about the spelling of his first name I knew him as Els.] Sylvia, married Jack Viles and they lived near Schofield, had a daughter that died as a teenager; Vinia, married Louis LeJeune and they lived on a farm just south of the Case Cemetery. They had a large family and I knew many of their children.
I wish we could have had this contact before Jan. 1999 while my father was still alive, he could have filled in many gaps. He lived to be 95 1/2 and was very alert mentally.
Now to the Case Cemetery info, I will supply the info in paragraph form rather than in table, perhaps that will work better for a computer novice like me. Martin Case b. Mar 15, 1825, d. Oct 10, 1862; Martin Case b. Dec 21, 1865 d. Sept 5, 1886; Thomas Case b. Aug 12, 1818, d. Nov 4, 1891; Mahala Jane Case [dau. of Thomas & Mary] b. Sept 23, 1845, d. Sept 17, 1864; Walter H. Case [son of H.J.&M.E.] b.Aug 18, 1886, d. Jul 26, 1887; Emmett Case b. Apr 19, 1891 d. Mar 9, 1892; Alice Eveline Case [dau of T.J.&M.J.] b Jun 30, 1888 d. Mar 9, 1890; M. C. Case b. Oct 1895 d. May 1899; R. S. Case b.Jul 1893 d. May 12, 1899.

Hi Patty, and Case Gang:
Thanks, Jerry, for forwarding Patty's e-mail. I'm also sending the info to a couple of intrepid Highfill cousins/researchers who have recently been digging into the Case line ... Bob Myers & Deanna Cline.
Regarding the questions Jerry brought up:
I have searched the available Hardeman Co. marriage records, and there is no record for Benjamin Highfill & Cynthia Case. According to family information passed down, Benjamin & Cynthia were married on 18 Apr 1853 in Dallas Co., MO, not Polk Co., MO. I was told certain early Dallas Co. marriage records are unavailable. This apparently includes the time when Benjamin & Cynthia were married, so we cannot verify the location of their marriage with a document.
The Highfill/Case/Jackson wagon train moved from TN to MO in 1853, probably in the early Spring because there would be food available on the way after the snow melt, and before it got too hot in the summer. In addition, it would give them time to plant crops after arriving in MO. I have a 1852 MO
land record for Benjamin Highfill in Dallas Co., MO. I believe Benjamin may have gone ahead to MO and acquired land so the families would have a place to stay after the move. Or he may have gone to check out the land situation in MO, sent word back to TN how wonderful the country was, and they decided to join him. Either way, he probably stayed in MO, as was required by the land sale, and waited for the TN families to join him. Cynthia and her family arrived with the Highfills, and I believe they were married soon after that arrival. (They would have known each other in TN, and may have even been sweethearts. In fact, he may have gone seeking land on which to build a house and make a living for him and his soon-to-be bride.)
I agree with an 1867 death date for Martin Case, Sr. I believe the 1862 date on the gravestone is wrong. Either it has weathered to look like a "7" or was inscribed wrong by the engraver. Since Martin Case, Jr. was not born until 1865, I believe the 1867 date makes more sense. I believe some of the Case Gang had a discussion about this some time ago, and we decided to go with the 1867 death date.
Regarding the other data forwarded by Patty:
According to available information, I have Benjamin Highfill's birthdate as 17 Mar 1832, not 7 Mar.
In addition, William Case, Sr. and Nancy ______ had 12 known children not 11. They were:
- Thomas James Case, Jr. - b. 12 Aug 1818 in MS. He m. Mary Ann Jackson on 24 Jun 1840 in Hardeman County, Tennessee
- Elizabeth Case - b. abt 1820 in MS. She married Jesse Shaw who was b. abt 1819 in TN
- Eliza Case - b. abt 1823 in MS or GA. She maried John S. Rowland.
- Martin Case, Sr. - b. 15 Mar 1825 in MS or GA. He married Barbara Jackson.
- Perry Case - b. abt 1826 in McNairy Co., TN. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" ______.
- Lovica "Vicey" Case - b. abt 1828 in McNairy Co., TN. She married James Rowland.
- Cynthia Case - b. 12 Jun 1830 in McNairy Co., TN. She married Benjamin Highfill.
- William Case, Jr. - b. abt 1832 in McNairy Co., TN. He married (1) Sara Self on 24 Jan 1856 in Polk Co., MO, (2) Martha Jane Teal about 1871.
- Nancy Case - b. 1835 In McNairy County, Tennessee. She married John J. Highfill on 12 Sep 1854 in Polk Co, MO.
- John Case, b. 12 Aug 1837 in McNairy Co., TN. He married Temperance Austin.
- Isham Case, b. 1839 in McNairy Co., TN. He married Molsa Spivey.
- Mary "Polly" Case, b. abt 1843 in McNairy Co., TN. She married David C. Cobal.
Patty - I am also descended from Benjamin Highfill and Cynthia Case through their daughter Sarah Elizabeth Highfill who married Charles Barrick. I think we may have corresponded sometime in the past.
