Hi Patty, and Case Gang:

Thanks, Jerry, for forwarding Patty's e-mail. I'm also sending the info to a couple of intrepid Highfill cousins/researchers who have recently been digging into the Case line ... Bob Myers & Deanna Cline.

Regarding the questions Jerry brought up:

I have searched the available Hardeman Co. marriage records, and there is no record for Benjamin Highfill & Cynthia Case. According to family information passed down, Benjamin & Cynthia were married on 18 Apr 1853 in Dallas Co., MO, not Polk Co., MO. I was told certain early Dallas Co. marriage records are unavailable. This apparently includes the time when Benjamin & Cynthia were married, so we cannot verify the location of their marriage with a document.

The Highfill/Case/Jackson wagon train moved from TN to MO in 1853, probably in the early Spring because there would be food available on the way after the snow melt, and before it got too hot in the summer. In addition, it would give them time to plant crops after arriving in MO. I have a 1852 MO land record for Benjamin Highfill in Dallas Co., MO. I believe Benjamin may have gone ahead to MO and acquired land so the families would have a place to stay after the move. Or he may have gone to check out the land situation in MO, sent word back to TN how wonderful the country was, and they decided to join him. Either way, he probably stayed in MO, as was required by the land sale, and waited for the TN families to join him. Cynthia and her family arrived with the Highfills, and I believe they were married soon after that arrival. (They would have known each other in TN, and may have even been sweethearts. In fact, he may have gone seeking land on which to build a house and make a living for him and his soon-to-be bride.)
